Michael J. Hagerty joined Plunkett Cooney's Title Insurance Law Practice Group after spending over 18 years serving as general counsel of Metropolitan Title Company. He has extensive experience representing title insurance companies; real estate buyers, sellers and developers; and lenders in transactional and litigation matters.

Mr. Hagerty has served as president of the Michigan Land Title Association, and is a former member of its board of directors and numerous standing and ad hoc committees.

Representative Client Work

  • Review, analyze and resolve real estate title disputes involving abstracting, constructive notice and other title examination issues
  • Represents title insurers and their insured parties as defendants or plaintiffs in recording and priority disputes, fraud claims, survey and adverse possession claims, easement issues and zoning and land use disputes
  • Represents title insurers and their insured parties involving failed developments, construction lien claims, construction payment issues and related construction matters
  • Represents owners and lenders in foreclosure, insolvency and bankruptcy matters, including recording issues, and preference or perfection claims by bankruptcy trustees
  • Counsels title insurance companies on title insurance coverage issues and escrow and closing disputes
  • Represents title insurance companies in agency disputes, embezzlements and defalcations
  • Represents title insurance companies in state and federal regulatory matters, including claims involving the Federal Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, Federal Truth in Lending Act, State Office of Financial and Industry Services issues and other related federal and state regulatory issues
  • Represents title insurance industry on legislative and regulatory matters
  • Facilitates title insurance and real estate disputes
  • Provides expert testimony on real estate, title and escrow issues
