Practice-Specific Experience

Matthew T. Tompkins is a member of the firm’s Grand Rapids office who focuses his practice in the area of civil litigation defense with extensive experience defending trucking and transportation matters, third party automobile negligence claims, construction loss claims, premises liability cases and general negligence matters, as well as product liability claims.

Mr. Tompkins' previous work experience includes representing policyholders of major insurance carriers and product manufacturers in civil litigation and defending healthcare providers involved in medical malpractice claims.

Mr. Tompkins is licensed to practice in Michigan’s state and federal courts. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Grand Rapids Bar Association and the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.

Representative Client Work

  • Obtained a defense verdict in a professional liability case after the jury determined that a debilitating knee injury was not related to the alleged negligent act
  • Received an adjusted verdict of $15,000 in a premises liability action with a jury demand in excess of $300,000
  • Obtained numerous dismissals via summary judgment on behalf of general contractors and subcontractors pursuant to the statute of repose
  • Successfully represented general contractors and construction management firms in complex, multiparty property loss and personal injury actions
  • Obtained a summary judgment on behalf of a saw manufacturer in a case where the plaintiff lost several digits on his dominant hand
