Brown named member of International Insurance organization

10.04.2010

Stephen P. Brown, a partner of Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, was recently selected for membership in the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC), an international organization whose members dedicate their practice to the representation of corporations and insurance companies in the defense of civil litigation.

FDCC membership is by invitation only following an extensive peer review selection process. Members of the FDCC have achieved distinction within the legal community and demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s guiding principles of knowledge, justice and fellowship. The FDCC has approximately 1,400 members, including attorneys in private practice, corporate counsel, risk managers and insurance claims executives from the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Founded in 1936, the FDCC is dedicated to assisting with the establishment of standards for providing competent, efficient and economical legal services; to encourage and provide continuing legal education to its members; and to use that knowledge and experience for the promotion of public good.

A member of the Plunkett Cooney’s Insurance Law Practice Group, Brown’s practice focuses exclusively on the representation of insurance companies in complex coverage disputes involving a wide spectrum of issues, including insurance coverage for underlying product liability and environmental contamination claims, among others. He has also represented corporate entities in complex product liability litigation.

In addition, Brown, who is a member in the firm’s Bloomfield Hills office, has extensive experience handling bad faith and failure to settle claims on behalf of insurance companies. His insurance coverage practice also includes a number of defense cost disputes where the reasonableness and necessity of such costs incurred by an insurance policyholder were at issue.

Brown has successfully defended a number of key insurance coverage issues and has authored numerous coverage opinions for insurance carrier clients on a range of topics such as coverage for advertising injury claims, sexual harassment, racial and sexual discrimination, assault and battery, defective products, and claims made/claims reported issues.

Admitted to practice law in several federal courts and pro hac vice in nine states, Brown received his law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1993 and his undergraduate degree from University of Michigan in 1990.

Established in 1913, Plunkett Cooney employs approximately 160 attorneys in nine Michigan cities, Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. The firm, which provides a range of transactional and litigation defense services, has achieved the highest rating (AV) awarded by Martindale-Hubbell, a leading, international directory of law firms. Plunkett Cooney is also listed among the U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in 2010.
