Plunkett Cooney among top 150 firms for female attorney diversity

07.19.2018

The National Law Journal (NLJ) recently named Plunkett Cooney – one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms – among the best in the nation for female attorney diversity.

The firm ranked 136th based on statistical data obtained as part of the NLJ’s annual survey of the 500 largest law firms in the nation. Only the largest 350 firms are eligible for the Women’s Scorecard. The National Law Journal is a monthly magazine that exclusively covers issues important to attorneys in public and private practice, judges and other members of the legal community.

“We’re pleased with our ranking in the NLJ survey, but we are focused on making even greater strides to move higher on the list,” said Plunkett Cooney President & CEO Thomas P. Vincent. “We’ve been successful advancing our goals, but the firm recently put into place its first ever Director of Diversity and Inclusion who will help create even more momentum.”

According to the report, which was published in the July edition of the NLJ magazine, Plunkett Cooney has a “Women in the Law Score” of 55.3. This statistic is determined by adding the percentage of female attorneys and percentage of female partners. The firm has 33.6% female attorneys with 21.7% female partners and 52.9% female associates.

In addition to its ranking for female diversity, Plunkett Cooney ranked 296th out of the 500 largest firms nationally with 137 attorneys firm wide. This is the third consecutive year the firm has been named to the NLJ list of top law firms for female diversity.

Since 2002, Plunkett Cooney has maintained a formal diversity program focused on attracting and retaining attorneys and staff from diverse backgrounds. Many of these efforts have been coordinated by the firm’s Diversity Committee. In 2018, the firm appointed its first ever Director of Diversity & Inclusion, Laurel F. McGiffert, who is a founding member of the committee. She is responsible for leading the firm’s efforts to create a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
