Seminar to slash trail through extended care industry legal jungle

Bloomfield Hills
10.10.2008

Like never before, nursing homes and extended care facilities are caught in the cross hairs of plaintiff’s attorneys and the federal government, resulting in more litigation and never-before-seen levels of regulation.

To assist nursing homes and extended care facilities cope with these serious business challenges, Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, is hosting its second annual Extended Care Seminar, titled: “Your Guide for Surviving and Thriving in Today’s Legal Jungle” on Friday, Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Troy Marriott Hotel.

This year's complimentary seminar is designed to benefit doctors, nurses, directors of nursing, administrators, executives, corporate compliance officers and risk managers who work in the extended care industry.

Plunkett Cooney attorneys with extensive experience in the healthcare and extended care fields will review such topics as the most common lawsuits brought against extended care facilities and staff; tips for avoiding liability; so-called "never events" and potential related litigation; Medicare set asides; the new federal nursing home rating system; and defensive charting techniques for nurses.

The half-day session will conclude with a panel discussion featuring insights from an extended care facility medical director, a director of nursing and an insurance claims professional who deal daily with extended care facility legal issues.

The seminar has been approved for 3.75 contact hours by the Michigan Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation, as well as by the Michigan Board of Nursing Home Administrators.
