An attorney in the firm's Bloomfield Hills office, Abe Barlaskar concentrates his litigation practice on defending insurers, rental car companies, trucking companies, corporations and municipalities in no-fault coverage disputes and negligence suits. Mr. Barlaskar also represents retail clients in litigation matters, including premises liability and food-borne illness cases, as well as negligence, general liability and other commercial disputes and criminal matters.

In addition, Mr. Barlaskar files affirmative legal action, including declaration actions in fraud cases and cases involving coverage disputes, as well as actions for claim and delivery.

Mr. Barlaskar is actively involved with the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance (CLM). He is a member of CLM's Insurance Fraud Committee and serves as the Co-Chair of the committee’s Adjusters Training Courses.

Designated by Michigan Super Lawyers as a Rising Star in general defense, Mr. Barlaskar frequently authors articles and conducts seminars for organizations, colleagues and clients in the insurance, automobile and retail industries, and on the most recent changes in the law and how it could affect their businesses.

Prior to joining Plunkett Cooney as an attorney, Mr. Barlaskar gained legal experience in federal court, at DTE Energy Company's legal department, and at the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, where he was assigned to district court to handle misdemeanors and felonies, including fraud cases.

  • Successfully argued and obtained summary disposition on behalf of commercial insurer carrier based upon on coverage issue where exposure exceeded $1 million
  • Successfully obtained summary disposition on behalf of commercial carrier in high-exposure subrogation case based upon trigger of interstate commerce clause of U.S. Constitution
  • Successfully argued and obtained summary disposition on behalf of international restaurant chain in foodborne illness case
  • Successfully defended trucking company in automobile negligence action involving catastrophic injuries, saving insured $3 million in potential exposure
  • Successfully obtained summary disposition in third-party automobile negligence action, arguing plaintiff did not suffer a “threshold” injury (MCL 500.3135(1)) even under the interpretation of “serious impairment of body function” articulated in McCormick v Carrier, 487 Mich 180; 795 NW2d 517 (2010)
  • Successfully argued and obtained summary disposition on behalf of store owner in premises liability/slip-and-fall case
  • Successfully argued and obtained summary disposition on behalf of corporations in automobile negligence claims
  • Successfully argued and obtained summary disposition on behalf of no-fault carriers regarding priority and coverage disputes
  • Successfully argued and obtained summary dismissal on behalf of insured client accused of fraud
  • Successfully argued motions for summary disposition on behalf of motor vehicle owners accused of negligence under the Michigan Owner's Liability Statute (MCL 257.401)
  • Successfully obtained voluntary dismissal after drafting and filing Motion for Summary Disposition on behalf of self-insured municipality in claim for no-fault benefits
  • Successfully argued and obtained summary disposition on behalf of insured driver in automobile negligence action, where Court ruled insured driver was not negligent as a matter of law
  • Successfully defended insurance company in property damage claim, saving $50,000
