Corl to discuss Title IX at symposium

02.26.2018

Attorney Christina L. Corl of Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, will be Christina Corl Title IX Symposium Speaker Plunkett Cooney Columbus Attorneyamong the featured speakers during an upcoming national symposium on the issue of on campus student sexual assaults.

The Fourth Annual Representing Students Accused of Sexual Assault Symposium will take place on March 23 in Washington, D.C. The symposium will focus on student sexual assault in the Post Dear-Colleague Letter Era. For the first time, the symposium will feature speakers like Corl who will speak on the issue of Title IX claims as seen from the point of view of academic institution defendants.

The symposium is sponsored by a consortium of plaintiff attorneys around the country who deal with Title IX cases. These attorneys represent students and schools in campus disciplinary proceedings at various stages and those who handle subsequent litigation.

Corl’s presentation, titled: “Litigation from the Institutional Perspective,” will cover understanding institutional process and decision-making, tips for dealing with in-house legal departments and the practical realities of institutional adjudication of sexual misconduct complaints. Other topics include case law updates, due process and Title IX in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, expert witnesses and handling school investigative processes.

In September 2017, the U.S. Department of Education rescinded its guidance to academic institutions on how to deal with sexual assault on campus, reversing course on a federal policy that played an important role in driving schools to do more to protect sexual assault victims. While federal guidance on campus sexual assault policy has returned to the pre-2011 era, college policies must reflect a changed and constantly shifting legal landscape.

Additionally, Corl serves as Special Counsel to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. In this capacity, she represents The Ohio State University, Miami University and the University of Cincinnati in employment and Title IX disputes. Her special counsel duties extend to other state agencies, including the Ohio Department of Insurance, Department of Corrections and Secretary of State.

A summa cum laude graduate of Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 1994, Corl graduated first in her class and received numerous academic accolades. She received her undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Western Michigan University in 1991.
