Veteran environmental attorney Mikalonis joins Plunkett Cooney
An environmental attorney for more than 20 years, Saulius K. Mikalonis recently joined Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, as a senior environmental and energy law attorney in the firm’s Bloomfield Hills office.
“Saulius is not just an environmental and energy law attorney, he’s a leader in the industry,” said Plunkett Cooney’s Business Law Department Leader Dennis G. Cowan. “His depth and breadth of knowledge is impressive and adds a new dimension to the firm’s energy and regulatory practice.”
As a member of the firm’s Energy Industry and Corporate/Transactional practice groups, Mikalonis will apply his extensive experience in environmental litigation related to consultant malpractice, cost recovery, toxic torts, solid and hazardous waste facilities citations and wetland issues.
Mikalonis has also developed particular expertise in the cutting-edge issues of environmental, natural resources and energy law concerning greenhouse gases, renewable and alternative energy and green building/LEED.
In addition, Mikalonis represents clients in commercial and real estate transactions involving the development of environmentally sensitive and Brownfield sites and due diligence in complex transactions, including the identification, allocation and reduction of environmental risks.
Mikalonis has been published extensively on various environmental topics, and frequently lectures to legal and professional organizations on environmental related issues. He is a recurring guest on WMTV’s “Great Lakes Log” television show, which discusses Environmental Protection Agency issues, and he formerly hosted the weekly radio show, titled: “New Ecology Law Program” on WJR-AM. In 2010, he will teach “Sustainable Development Law and Policy” to students at Thomas M. Cooley Law School. In addition, he is the author of MLive.com’s Green Blawg, which covers laws, regulations, court decisions and policies pertaining to environmental and sustainability issues.
Mikalonis received his law degree from the University of Oregon Law School in 1986 and his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1980.
Admitted to practice in Michigan, the District of Columbia and Michigan federal courts, Mikalonis is a member of the State Bar of Michigan's Environmental Law Section, the District of Columbia Bar Association and the American Bar Association’s Section on Environment, Energy and Resources. He is also a member of the board of directors for the U.S. Green Building Council-Detroit Area Chapter.
