Plunkett Cooney’s Matthew Cross named 2023 Up & Coming Lawyer

Plunkett Cooney associate attorney, Matthew W. Cross, was recently named to the 2023 Class of Up & Coming Lawyers by Michigan Lawyers Weekly (MiLW), an industry publication serving the state’s legal community.

Cross, who serves as Co-leader of Plunkett Cooney’s Torts & Litigation Practice Group, will be honored, along with 21 other Michigan attorneys, at a recognition luncheon on April 21 at the Detroit Marriott Troy and will be included in a special print feature published in the April 24 issue of MiLW.

The Up & Coming Lawyers program honors attorneys throughout Michigan who have excelled in the profession and set themselves apart from their peers with legal accomplishments and community involvement during the first 10 years of practice.

Cross, who is member of Plunkett Cooney’s Petoskey office, focuses his practice primarily in the areas of municipal law, election law and the defense of litigation involving insured liability claims.

Cross has experience handling an array of litigation, including premises liability, employment disputes, religious institutions liability and personal injury matters. He also directly represents numerous public- and private-sector clients.

Cross defends his public-sector clients in a variety of litigation matters. He has represented municipalities and their personnel in cases involving election law, employment law, civil rights and constitutional issues, as well as claims of excessive force and deliberate indifference against law enforcement and correctional officers. 

A member of the State Bar of Michigan since 2013, Cross is a member of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys, and he served as the regional chair of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel. He currently serves as Assistant City Attorney for the cities of Boyne City and Petoskey, Township Attorney for Tuscarora Township and counsel for the Health Department of Northwest Michigan. Cross received his law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 2013 and his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Ferris State University in 2008.
