Free Press names Plunkett Cooney among its 2011 ‘top places to work’

11.14.2011

The Great Place to Work Initiative at Plunkett Cooney, one of the oldest and largest law firms in Michigan, continues to “reap awards” as evidenced by the firm’s inclusion on the Detroit Free Press list of “Top Places to Work” for the fourth consecutive year.

According to Plunkett Cooney’s award notification letter, initiatives implemented as part of the firm’s “Great Place to Work” efforts were among the leading factors for its inclusion on the list again this year. The Detroit Free Press has highlighted all of its 2011 Top Workplaces in a features section published in its Nov. 13 issue.

“The firm’s management team continues to work hard at retaining its outstanding employees. One of the ways we do this is by focusing on making Plunkett Cooney a great place to work,” said Henry B. Cooney, the firm’s President and CEO. “This award is a barometer of sorts that lets us know we are doing the right things to keep our attorneys and staff happy and productive.”

Each year the Detroit Free Press partners with WorkplaceDynamics of Exton, PA to conduct its Top Workplaces survey. Each regional employer that responds is placed in three categories ranging in size from small businesses to employers with over 500 workers.

Employees completing the survey rated their respective companies on 22 factors with prompts such as “My manager makes good use of my skills" and "I have many opportunities to learn and grow at this organization." What mattered most overall for the surveyed employees was the belief that their employer was moving in the right direction, followed closely by working for an employer that operates by strong values and ethics, and having confidence in the organization’s leader.

Plunkett Cooney ranked 20th out of 35 companies in the survey’s medium size category. In addition to employee surveys, WorkplaceDynamics conducts its own independent research to validate employee feedback.

The firm’s “Great Place to Work” initiative goes beyond compensation to focus on added value benefits beyond traditional health, vision, dental and insurance plans offered by most companies. The program includes such opportunities as continuing education, special events, employee convenience services, diversity recruitment and retention, mentoring, wellness programs and much more.

Plunkett Cooney was also recently honored by the Michigan Business & Professional Association as one of its “101 Best & Brightest Places to Work For,” an honor the firm has received since it was first awarded in 2005.

Established in 1913, Plunkett Cooney employs more than 160 attorneys in nine Michigan cities, Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. The firm, which provides a range of transactional and litigation services, has achieved the highest rating (AV) awarded by Martindale-Hubbell, a leading, international directory of law firms.
