08.15.2013

Ellen Bartman Jannette, a partner in the Professional Liability Practice Group of Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, was recently selected by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as one of its "2013 Women in the Law."

“This is a truly well-deserved honor,” said D. Jennifer Andreou, a member of Plunkett Cooney’s Board of Directors and the firm’s Medical Liability Practice Group Leader, who nominated Jannette as a Woman in the Law. “Ellen is a mentor to our young attorneys, and she is committed to volunteering her time and talents to the community."

Honorees will be recognized in a special section of Michigan Lawyers Weekly on Sept. 26 and will be honored at the fourth annual Women in the Law luncheon on Friday, Sept. 27, at the Detroit Marriott in Troy, Michigan.

A Michigan Lawyers Weekly editorial panel selected this year’s honorees, considering a number of criteria, including each nominee’s commitment to excellence in the practice of law; inspiration and accomplishment as leaders in the profession; mentorship to other women; and significant contribution of time and effort to volunteerism and/or pro bono.

In addition to her busy practice, Jannette chairs Plunkett Cooney’s Women’s Initiative Committee, and she is the driving force behind the firm’s 100 Acts of Kindness (AOK) campaign. As part of its year-long centennial anniversary celebration, the attorneys and staff at Plunkett Cooney are undertaking 100 acts of coordinated kindness.

Jannette has been instrumental in coordinating the AOK campaign, which has included firm members donating time and items to such causes as local soup kitchens, blood drives, community clean ups, collection drives for the troops, and much more. In addition, Jannette is a longtime supporter of Gleaners Community Food Bank, where she has coordinated numerous firm volunteer days over the years.

A member of the firm’s Bloomfield Hills office, Jannette focuses her practice in the area of professional liability. Her practice includes the defense of lawyers, real estate agents and brokers, insurance agents and brokers, accountants and other professionals in malpractice litigation.

Jannette is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Oakland County and American bar associations, the Michigan Women's Tax Association and the DRI - the Voice of the Defense Bar.  She received her law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1988 and her undergraduate degree, cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh in 1984.

Plunkett Cooney employs over 150 attorneys in nine Michigan cities, Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. The firm, which provides a range of transactional and litigation services, has achieved the highest rating (AV) awarded by Martindale-Hubbell and is listed among the U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” in 2013.
