Plunkett Cooney repeats as top law firm fund-raiser for Heart Walk

09.23.2008

Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, has brought home The Cup — the 2008 American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Walk Lawyer’s Cup that is, for the second consecutive year.

The Lawyer’s Cup is presented by the AHA to the top fund-raising law firm for its annual Metro Detroit Heart Walk, which benefits the organization’s heart attack and stroke awareness, prevention and research efforts. Plunkett Cooney surpassed its $20,000 goal this year, netting $21,797. Last year, the firm took top legal industry honors with more than $17,000 in donations.

“I’m very proud of the firm’s effort this year,” said Henry B. Cooney, Plunkett Cooney’s President and CEO. “Our employees worked extremely hard in a difficult economic climate to beat last year’s total. The Heart Walk is a great event and the heart association’s work benefits our entire community.”

The firm took home the Lawyer’s Cup following the 2008 Heart Walk Awards Party at Pi Restaurant in Southfield. Approximately 150 people attended the July 23 event, which included corporate executives, team leaders and top walkers. Numerous companies and individuals received awards and acknowledgements for their efforts.

In addition to taking home the cup, one of Plunkett Cooney’s fund-raising teams, “Hearts United,” was acknowledged among the top overall revenue producers in 2008. Led by Laurel McGiffert, a shareholder in the firm’s Detroit office and member of Plunkett Cooney’s board of directors, “Hearts United” raised $8,654.

The 2008 Heart Walk was held on May 17 on the grounds of the Southfield Municipal Center. More than 12,000 people participated in this year’s walk, which generated over $1.5 million for the AHA.

Since 1924, the AHA has helped protect people of all ages and backgrounds from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. As the nation’s number one and three killers, these diseases claim the lives of nearly one million Americans each year. Established in 1913, Plunkett Cooney employs 150 attorneys in nine Michigan cities and one each in Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. The firm has achieved the highest rating (AV) awarded by Martindale-Hubbell, a leading, international directory of law firms.
