09.08.2020

Plunkett Cooney attorney and former Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives Tom Leonard has been named as a Crain’s Detroit Business 40 Under 40 honoree for 2020.

Honorees were selected by Crain's editorial staff members based on their career accomplishments, impact in their field and contributions to their community. Most candidates were nominated by peers or colleagues, but some were chosen by the Crain’s newsroom.

This year’s class of 40 Under 40 will be announced in the Sept. 7 issue of Crain’s. The publication will also hold a virtual celebration for all honorees on Nov. 16.

Leonard is a partner and leader of the new Government Relations, Public Policy and Regulatory Practice Group at Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and most accomplished law firms. He focuses his practice on policy development, strategic collaboration, building relationships and coalitions, legislative monitoring and bill tracking.

Before joining the firm, Leonard served three terms in the House of Representatives. In his third and final term, his colleagues unanimously selected him to serve as Michigan’s 75th House Speaker. Prior to running for public office, Leonard served as an assistant attorney general for the state of Michigan and as a prosecutor in Genesee County’s Special Crimes Division.

Leonard graduated from Michigan State University College of Law in 2007 and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 2004.

The members of Plunkett Cooney’s Government Relations, Public Policy & Regulatory Practice Group work with their clients as they strategize, communicate, streamline and attack political issues efficiently and effectively to influence public policy, legislation and regulatory issues. In addition to Leonard, practice group members also include former counsel to the Michigan Senate Majority Leader, past elected and appointed officials and two former members of the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.

Established in 1913, Plunkett Cooney is a leading provider of business and litigation services to clients in the private and public sectors. The firm employs approximately 140 attorneys in seven Michigan cities, Chicago, Illinois; Columbus, Ohio; and Indianapolis, Indiana. Plunkett Cooney has achieved the highest rating (AV) awarded by Martindale-Hubbell, a leading, international directory of law firms. The firm was also selected by Crain’s Detroit Business as its inaugural Law Firm of the Year.
