Bio

William (Bill) R. Stone is a senior attorney in Plunkett Cooney’s Lansing office and a member of the firm’s Government Relations, Public Policy and Regulatory Practice Group. 

Mr. Stone’s legal expertise includes real estate law, cybersecurity liability, commercial liability, restructuring, bankruptcy and insolvency and related litigation. He also maintains a robust advisory practice focused on assisting clients with policy development, strategic collaboration, relationship and coalition building, legislative monitoring and bill tracking, among other related activities.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Stone worked in public and private practice, including several years as in-house counsel for the nation’s largest mortgage lender. His public service experience includes several roles in both the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives, as well as serving as general counsel for the city of Detroit.

Representative Client Work

  • Advised city of Detroit officials on a variety of legal matters and collaborated with various departments, agencies, companies and nonprofit agencies on projects that impacted the city
  • Successfully represented and appealed the Michigan Senate’s litigation in state and federal courts
  • Drafted major legislation and advised Michigan Senate leadership on significant policy priorities
  • Served as legal and policy director for the Michigan House of Representatives where he advised members and proposed legislation on bills, including the state’s auto insurance reform and other major legislation
  • Managed all litigation for the nation’s largest mortgage lender, including class actions, employment liability and intellectual property cases, led the company’s response to federal regulatory investigations, negotiated contracts with vendors and managed the company’s trademarks
