Bogren selected to receive Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award

Plunkett Cooney partner Michael S. Bogren has been selected by the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA) to receive the organization’s 2022 Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award.

Bogren, who has served as chair of Plunkett Cooney’s board of directors since 2012 and a member since 2003, is a one of the most accomplished members of the firm’s Governmental Law Practice Group. He focuses his practice in the areas of municipal law, civil rights, police liability and employment law.

The Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award is presented for outstanding contributions to the practice of municipal law on behalf of cities, townships and villages throughout Michigan, and it acknowledges the highest level of professional accomplishment while also recognizing service to colleagues through professional organizations such as MAMA. The award will be presented to Bogren during MAMA’s Municipal Law Program Annual Meeting on Oct. 13 at the Crowne Plaza Lansing West hotel in Lansing, Michigan.

Nominees for the award must currently or previously served as a municipal attorney. Bogren serves as outside counsel to the Michigan Municipal League Liability & Property Pool, which provides insurance to hundreds of municipalities throughout the state. Criteria to be considered include leadership, successful representation of municipal interests, participation and service to professional organizations, exemplary integrity and dedication.

A 1982 cum laude graduate of University of Detroit School of Law, Bogren has extensive experience representing municipalities in both state and federal court claims involving due process matters, first amendment issues, Michigan Open Meetings and Freedom of Information Act violations, zoning disputes and employment law disputes, including cases involving the Americans with Disabilities Act, gender discrimination and sexual harassment.

Bogren is a member of the Public Corporations Section of the State Bar of Michigan and the Civil Rights Section of the Federal Bar Association.

MAMA is a nonprofit and was created in 1935 as a chartered section of the Michigan Municipal League. The association is governed by a board of directors elected by municipal attorneys from MML member cities and villages.
