Bio

Kevin T. Mackin is an attorney in the firm’s Labor & Employment Practice Group who serves as defense counsel for employers facing allegations under federal statutes like Title VII and the Family and Medical Leave Act, Michigan’s Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights and Whistleblower Protection acts, and other accusations of discriminatory practices.

Mr. Mackin has successfully defended his clients in Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Michigan Civil Rights matters involving allegations of discrimination, as well as in claims alleging wrongful termination, whistleblower retaliation and politically motivated employment decisions.

In his direct representation of several metropolitan Detroit municipalities, Mr. Mackin has successfully resolved employment matters involving significant public scrutiny and criticism. Armed with years of high-pressure defense experience and an extensive trial record, he provides his clients with an array of legal options ranging from risk mitigation to full-scale trial defense.

In addition to defending employers in active disputes, Mr. Mackin has extensive experience in consulting and collaborating with employers to draft employment agreements and training documents to ensure compliance with all state and federal employment requirements.

Prior to his career as a labor and employment attorney, Mr. Mackin built a successful practice as a criminal defense attorney in Southwestern Michigan, serving as lead trial counsel in several notable homicide and narcotic trafficking cases.

Representative Client Work

  • Successfully defended a Michigan politician from a Whistleblower and Open Meetings Act suit in a highly publicized matter involving a former city manager
  • Represented a group of state-licensed mental health professionals in their successful bid to gain control of the board of a large, nonprofit professional advocacy organization
  • Obtained voluntary dismissal of a discrimination action filed by a former employee after independently discovering and exposing the plaintiff’s texts to a co-worker about the case
  • Secured dismissal of claims of racial, sex-based, religious and age discrimination complaints through position statements to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and EEOC on behalf of employers throughout Michigan and Indiana
  • Served as defense counsel on Title VII, reasonable accommodation and Family Medical Leave Act matters in several federal actions against employers in Michigan and Illinois
  • Represented nursing homes and home health care services in wrongful death actions involving inflammatory fact patterns and negative publicity
